VIDEO: St. Georges named Blue Hen Champions
Before the DIAA Boys Basketball State Tournament starts up next week, St. Georges and Newark had one more order of business to settle.
The Blue Hen Championship trophy was on the line at St. Mark's High School on Saturday evening, and Lamar Hamrick's 23 point effort lifted St. Georges over Newark with a 55-47 victory.
Newark led 11-10 at the end of the first, with help from Jahsun Greer, who put up nine points in the opening quarter.
Zaire Jacobs-Beazer put the Hawks ahead early in the second quarter, and Kyson Rawls' 3-pointer sent St. Georges to the locker room with a 27-21 advantage.
St. Georges led by as many as 11 points in the third, but Newark's Daquan Smith scored six points that quarter to keep the Yellowjackets within one point.
Going into the final quarter, Newark trailed St. Georges 38-37.
Although Newark opened the fourth quarter with a 3-pointer from Brendan Sherman, Hamrick quickly answered with a three of his own to put the Hawks back in front. The Hawks never looked back from there.
Hamrick, who led all scorers, scored 11 of his 23 points in the final quarter, and St. Georges' defense secured the win.
Jacobs-Beazer chipped in 13 points for St. Georges.
Greer led the Yellowjackets with 16 points.
Newark and St. Georges get back on the court on Wednesday, when they play in the opening round of the playoffs.
Newark, ranked No. 11, will host No. 22 Laurel.
St. Georges, ranked No. 10, will host No. 23 Charter.
