Teacher at Public Safety Academy arrested on child sex charges

A Delaware Academy of Public Safety and Security teacher is accused of having sex with a student.

State Police say 27-year-old Jerry Shorts of Wilmington had a sexual relationship with a 17-year-old girl, who was a student of his.

The investigation began in March when administration at the charter high school on North DuPont Highway in the New Castle area notified detectives about the allegations.

Police say Shorts and the student's sexual relationship dates back to October of last year.

Shorts faces four counts of sexual abuse of a child by a person of trust and one count of continuous sexual abuse of a child. He's behind bars on $125,000 bail.

Charles Hughes, Head of School, tells WDEL Shorts was on administrative leave since the investigation began. After Shorts was arrested, he was fired.

"While we have no reason to believe any other cadets were involved, we will of course continue to monitor developments. Our entire staff remains committed to providing our cadets with an outstanding academic and career preparation program in a safe and nurturing environment," said Hughes in a written statement.
