Bill banning minors from using tanning beds introduced in state House
By Frank Gerace

State House Speaker Bob Gilligan has introduced a bill to ban minors from using tanning beds in Delaware.

House Bill 400 would prohibit anyone under 18 from using ultraviolet-emitting indoor tanning facilities without a doctor's prescription.

Gilligan said in a statement Wednesday that the measure is aimed at stopping teenagers from developing skin cancer as a result of using tanning beds, which in 2009 were classified as carcinogenic to humans by the International Agency for Research on Cancer.

Gilligan's bill also requires warning signs at tanning facilities, and calls on workers at those facilities to give written warnings of indoor tanning's risks to customers.

The measure's been assigned to the House Health and Human Development Committee.
