Dover police have charged a city resident with attacking and injuring an elderly man.

Police say 50-year-old Joseph DeSalvo was drunk when he pounded on the door of the 84-year-old victim's door and then broke the window of the victim's bathroom late Monday night.

When officers arrived on-scene in the 400 block of East Avenue around 11:30, they could hear a ruckus inside, and when the cops went in, they saw the victim on the floor, bleeding from his head.

DeSalvo was standing over the elderly man, holding a piece of rebar.

Desalvo, who was also charged with violating a no-contact order, is being held at the Vaughn Correctional Center.
