Governor Markell and State Education Secretary Mark Murphy are pleased with students' scores on the test that replaced the Delaware Student Testing Program.

In a town hall teleconference Wednesday, Murphy said reading and math scores in all grades on the Delaware Comprehensive Assessment System test improved by a wider margin than expected this year.

"We were looking to three to five point gains depending on the area that we were taking about. And seeing seven point gains is tremendously encouraging and inspiring based on the work our teachers are doing," Murphy said.

Scores in all grades were up 7 points from last year - exceeding expectations.

"A ballpark estimation would be that five percentage points growth would be statistically significant. And frankly, if you look around the country at what growth you're seeing at the state level, it would show you that growth is very significant comparatively," Murphy said.

The scores released Wednesday are preliminary. Final results will be released next month.

The DCAS replaced the Delaware Student Testing Program two years ago.
