Final workshop on Newport train station
Updated Thursday, June 14, 2012 - 1:29pm
Can a train station thrive in Newport?
A final public workshop on the possibility of a train station in Newport is being held today.
Dave Gula with WILMAPCO says his agency has been collecting data, compiling a study and listening to residents on the issue, and all that will be addressed at the workshop.
"The potential for ridership is there. (There are) potential benefits to the town both in encouraging more transit use and actually encouraging growth as a function of that transit, " Gula says.

Gula says the cost to get it up and running concerns some people.
"People think it's really high. But what they don't realize is how much it costs to do similar roadway projects of a similar scale. So I think there will be some questions about the cost - why it's going to cost so much. And we're going to explain that as thoroughly as we can. But at this level of study, it's hard to do more than say 'we've estimated a cost range,'" Gula says.

The workshops run 4 to 5:30 this afternoon and 5:30 to 7pm at the Old Newport Town Hall at 15 North Augustine Street.
