Deck ripped off the Lighthouse Restaurant (Dewey Beach PD)
Severe weather rips through Sussex County causing significant damage in Dewey Beach.

The National Weather Service says it was a 69-mile-per-hour straight-line wind out of Rehoboth Bay that slammed into the Lighthouse Restaurant Monday morning, destroying the restaurant's deck.

Josh Tallent is the restaurant's head line cook, who witnessed the whole thing. He tells WDEL it looked like a waterspout.

"All of a sudden in like five seconds it got real real like dark like almost night. And then I turn around I see a wall of water coming. I turn over to the left, and I see the deck flying right off the top, took the awning off of the other side and landed on the beach," says Tallent.

No one was hurt, but it caused quite a stir.

"It came outta no where and ripped the whole damn deck off the top," says Tallent.

Tallent says he's never seen anything like it.

"Never seen it before in my life, it was kind of crazy. Like I've never seen it happen in person before. It only lasted for like a minute, maybe, and then it was completely gone, and within an hour it was sunny again, real nice," says Tallent.

West of Dewey Beach across the bay, severe weather also took its toll.

Joe Thomas, the Sussex County Emergency Operations Director, tells WDEL the storm hit at 9 am and was centered in the Oak Orchard/Long Neck area.

"We've had numerous trees go down in the roadway as well as some tree into some structures," says Thomas.

Thomas says several homes sustained damage though they've haven't receive any reports of injuries.
