A new federal report shows the Centers for Disease Control investigated 11 deaths among young people in Kent and Sussex counties from January to May this year.

Mary Kate McLaughlin with the Department of Services for Children, Youth and Their Families, says while there was a cluster of deaths in the Polytech School District....

"We're not way off from the rest of the country in terms of behaviors in suicidal behavior in the young adults that were looked at," she said.

The preliminary report shows the suicides don't appear to be related. McLaughlin says they are already acting on recommendations by the CDC.

"Sort of an intake person that would help take inquiries and requests for mental health treatment and help route people to the appropriate places, and also help connect people to options for payment and things like that," McLaughlin said.

Other recommendations include expanding existing prevention activities from middle school to high school, and training for school personnel to recognize behavior patterns.
