Georgetown All-American Sugar Rodgers set a building-opponent record with 35 points as the Hoyas defeated No. 11 Delaware 62-56 in the second round of the Pre-season WNIT Sunday afternoon
Delaware, playing without Elena Delle Donne who was recovering from symptoms of Lyme Disease, cut Georgetown's lead to 49-48 on a Trumae Lucas 3-pointer with 4:12 remaining, but that but the Blue Hens would get just one more field goal until another Lucas 3 with seven seconds remaining and the game all but decided.
In that deciding streak, Delaware went 2-of-5 from the free throw stripe, including leading scorer Lauren Carra missing two of three in a situation where all three would have tied the game at 52 with 3:11 left. Meanwhile Delaware sent the Hoyas to the line 3 times, where they went 5-of-6 and also benefitted from a pair of baskets in the paint from Rodgers.
Delaware's last best chances came with 1:40 left down 3, when Carra missed a 3, and then after a Hoya miss, Carra has a jumper go off the rim, and then after an offensive rebound by Jaquetta May, Kayla Miller committed her 6th turnover of the game.
Playing from behind was a common theme for Delaware in the battle with the Big East opponent, as Delaware fell behind 8-2 immediately behind a pair of threes by Rogers along with a 2-point basket. The Hoyas could never get the lead past 8, but Delaware claiming it's one and only lead at 30-28 just before halftime, and took that lead into the break.
The slow start from the first half replicated itself in the second, as Danielle Parker's basket at the 13:31 left in the game finally got the Blue Hens off of 30, but by then they were trailing 35-30.
Delaware had a 15-game home and 18 regular season overall winning streaks end with the loss, which matches their entire regular season total from a year ago.
Carra scored 19 points for the Hens despite going 2-of-10 from three and 7-of-13 at the line, she also added 9 rebounds. Danielle Parker recorded her 16th career double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds.
The Blue Hens will play at least one consolation round WNIT game on the road, the game time and opponent should be announced Monday afternoon.
