Banking on sports tourism--that's what Kent County is doing as they begin construction on a massive new sports complex in Frederica.

Bill Strickland is President of the Greater Dover Committee.

"What we envision here in Kent County is using sports tourism as an economic development tool to drive out-of-state license plates into the parking lots of our hotels, restaurants, and other merchants," explains Strickland.

The complex will have 15 rectangular fields, 10 grass fields and 5 turf fields, including a championship field that can seat 1,500 spectators.

It will also house indoor sporting facilities.

"Two rectangular fields that can be used in inclement weather or throughout the year for soccer, lacrosse, field hockey, football, mostly rectangular field sports," he says.

Strickland says Wesley College, Delaware Tech, and local high schools will also use the fields for in-conference tournament play.

"Having 15 fields all located on the same site will make this an attractive venue for regional and national tournament play," Strickland and says.
