Bayhealth Medical Center is making final preparations to open a free-standing emergency room in Smyrna, something Democratic Representative Trey Paradee says is vital.
"That's critical--that saves lives, that's the difference between a family in this area being able to get care within a matter of just a couple minutes, as opposed to either having to go to Dover or having to go to Christiana, which could take anywhere from 30-45 minutes or more, and that's the difference between somebody surviving and somebody not."
The 8-bed, $3.4 million facility on Route 300 will be able to handle a wide range of emergencies, and be able to stabilize other patients for transfer elsewhere.
State lawmakers were among the notables who turned out Monday for the new ER's ribbon-cutting.
