Delaware panel eyes transgender discrimination
Updated Thursday, January 10, 2013 - 6:28am
The governor's Equal Employment Opportunity Council is looking at the issue of workplace discrimination against transgender people in Delaware.
The council was to review draft guidelines regarding transgenders at its meeting today in Dover.
The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, which enforces federal job discrimination laws, ruled last April that transgender people are protected from discrimination under the federal civil rights act.
The administrative ruling was not binding on state and federal courts, but legal experts said it set a national enforcement standard offering employers clear guidance on the issue.
