Del. lawmakers want say on privatizing port

Democratic lawmakers have introduced a bill that would prevent the Markell administration from privatizing operations at the Port of Wilmington without the consent of the General Assembly.
The bill introduced Thursday by Sen. Robert Marshall of Wilmington would prevent the state-controlled Diamond State Port Corporation from entering into any agreement to privatize or lease the port without first obtaining approval from the House and Senate.
Officials announced last month that Houston-based energy company Kinder Morgan was the preferred bidder to take over port operations in a long-term lease arrangement.
Marshall has said he is concerned that a for-profit corporation might cut jobs if it takes over the port.
