Four seconds remained, when Delcastle freshman Lorenzo Hopkins grabbed a critical rebound after Polytech's Antonio DePina's shot bounced off the rim. Hopkins drained two free throws after the missed shot to secure the 40-37 upset on Thursday night.
Polytech (12-4) was leading by nine late in the second quarter, when Devaughn Mallory went inside for the lay up to give the Panthers a 18-9 edge.
Although the Cougars were losing 22-17 at the half, Terris Purnell opened the third with the downtown 3-pointer to pull Delcastle within two. Purnell led all scorers with 16- points.
The young Flight-A squad saw the losing margin increase, with the help of DePina's 6-of-10 Polytech points in the third. The Panthers led 32-26 going into the final quarter. Depina finished with 10.
Delcastle (8-9) trailed for the majority of the game , but took their first lead since the opening quarter, when Ronald Freeman sank a bucket followed by Dannijah Thompson's long-range two to lift the Cougars 35-32 with less than three minutes remaining.
Delcastle outscored Polytech 14-5 in the fourth quarter.
Foul shots proved to be a challenge for both teams, but Hopkins made his two count to secure a Delcastle victory.
Delcastle only has two games remaining in the regular season against Sanford and Concord. The only other Panthers' losses come from Hodgson, Riverdale Baptist (MD.), and Seaford. Polytech has a rematch against Seaford Friday hoping to seek revenge.
