A Wilmington city councilman and state education officials are pushing people to get their GED before the test changes next January.

Third District Councilman Darius Brown says beginning in 2014, someone taking the test will need computer skills and be able to write more narrative answers.

"One in three residents in the Third District ages 25 and above do not have a high school diploma or GED. So for me, it's about creating pathways out of poverty, but also helping my residents become more employable," he said.

The campaign is aimed at older workers, like Emelda McLennon of Wilmington, who lost her job at a bank.

"So I wanted to go in a different direction, but when I went to sign up for one of the classes, they didn't take my credential, they wanted me to have a GED," she said.

Mike Brown of Newport is working on his GED and urging his friends to get theirs.

"I say, if you get your GED, you'll get a better job then," Brown said.

Maureen Whalen, director of Adult and Prison Resources with the state Department of Education, says if you don't make the deadline, there is help for you.

"Come January 2014 when the new computer-based GED goes in place, we've got the programs in place to be able to help folks get past it," she said.

The cost of the test is also going up January 1, 2014. If you're already working on your GED and don't get it finished by Dec. 31, you'll have to start over.
