VIDEO: Highlights and Reaction of St. Andrew's vs. DMA

St. Andrew's size finally proved too much for a gritty Delaware Military Academy squad in a hard-fought 54-47 DIAA Girls' Basketball 1st Round game at Middletown High School Wednesday night.

The 15th-seeded Cardinals led DMA 35-25 after breaking a halftime tie with the first 10 points of the second half capped off by a three-pointer from Janee Dennis.

No. 18 DMA's Leigh Ann Lennon then responded with the next five points, as she scored 12 points in the second half despite warding off foul trouble all evening.

The Cardinals (16-5) eventually led 43-37 after three, only to see DMA make a couple of late pushes late, including cutting the margin to three in the final minute and a half, but Morgan Hallow's banked three-pointer put St. Andrew's in control at 51-44.

DMA fired the first salvo in the even first half, going ahead 7-2 before St. Andrew's scored the next seven points to claim the lead. The teams went back and forth with Erika Pierce's hook shot putting DMA ahead 25-24, before a free throw with no time remaining in the half sparked what became the critical 11-0 run in the game.

St. Andrew's freshman Olivia Gumbs, the tallest player on the court, finished with 21 points despite solid defense inside by the smaller Seahawks. Dennis scored 13 points, with Hallow adding 8.

Lennon ended her DMA career with 14 points, while fellow senior Pierce scored 12. The Seahawks saw their season end at 16-5.

Next up for St. Andrew's is a tussle with No. 2 Sanford (15-5), a team that beat the Cardinals 46-22 back in December and 65-37 last month.
