Wilmington Friends battled back late in the final quarter and even took the lead, however, top-seeded Sanford proved to be too much late down the stretch, and Sabri Thompson led his team to hang on to a thrilling 45-44 win in a DIAA Boys' Basketball quarterfinals match up.

The Quakers were down by as many as nine points in the first half, but with 37 seconds remaining in the second quarter, Sam Carney forced a turnover and received the goal-tending call to bring his team within one. At the break, Sanford led 22-21.

With a little more than six minutes remaining in the third, Thompson extended the lead to eight, 29-21, when he drove to the hoop and sunk the lay up. Sanford's Thompson led all scorers with 15 points.

Friends continued to fight. Carney, who finished with 11 points, nailed a downtown shot, followed by Larenz Thurman's two made free throws that put the Quakers within three. The score was 32-29 going into the final quarter. Thurman finished with 12.

Sanford was up by as many as six in the fourth because of key free throw shooting by Todd Hughes and Austin Ford, but Friends would not back down.

Friends' Marcus Delpeche, who finished with 13 points, tied the game late in the fourth. He would have a chance to take the lead, after being fouled, he missed. His brother, Malcolm Delpeche was there for the rebound and Friends led 39-37 with a little more than two minutes left.

The lead would be short-lived because junior Anthony Mosley tied the game at 41 with a little more than a minute left and key free throw shooting would secure the victory.

Friends finished the season with a 14-8 record.

Warriors' Kyle Rose and Hughes added eight points each on the night.

Sanford (18-4) heads to the Bob Carpenter Center to face No. 4 seed Salesianum (19-3) in a semifinal showdown at 8pm.
