By Amy Cherry 1:27pm, April 2, 2013 - Updated 2:37pm, April 2, 2013Reporting crime, there's an app for that.
WDEL's Amy Cherry reports.
State Police are taking advantage of technology. They've launched a new, free mobile crime tip app.
"It's convenient, it's easy, and it's almost instantaneous. Wherever you are, you always have your cell phone with you, so that's what we're hoping that get a lot of crime tips from this application," says State Police Sergeant Paul Shavack.
Shavack says users can report the location of crime activity, a subject description, a vehicle description, and even upload a photograph to the app.
Have no fear, the app addresses concerns of anonymity.
"By default, it's an anonymous submission. But if you don't want to remain anonymous, and you want to interact with troopers to provide more information, you can do that also," says Shavack.
Shavack hopes the iPhone and Android app will surpass other methods of reporting crime tips. If the suspected criminal activity is happening outside State Police jurisdiction, they'll forward it along to County Police, Wilmington Police, or the appropriate authorities.
"Cause when the public becomes involve and provides crime tips, it helps keep the community safe," says Shavack.
