(AP Photo/Michael Perez)Ryan Howard, Michael Young, and John Mayberry, Jr. each hit home runs in a 5 pitch span of the 3rd inning to support Cliff Lee in an 8-3 Phillies win over the Mets Tuesday night.
The Phillies already had a 4-0 lead after two innings thanks to a 2-run double by Mayberry, Jr. along with RBI hits by Cliff Lee and Jimmy Rollins when Howard led off the 3rd.
Howard took a Dillon Gee fastball and deposited it just over the 387 sign in deep left center field to put the Phillies up 5-0.
Gee's next pitch was another fastball, which Young rocketed out to right field for the Phillies first back-to-back home runs of the season.
Domomic Brown popped out on the first pitch, and then Mayberry, Jr. took a curveball for a ball before taking another fastball just inside the left field foul pole for another home run.
Each of the home runs were their first round trips of the season.
The offensive explosion supported Lee, who picked up his second victory by giving up 3 runs (2 earned) in 8 innings of work. The Mets' biggest hit was a 2-run homer by catcher John Buck, his second blast in two days. Buck has 14 RBI in 8 games, just one behind Darryl Strawberry's club record for the span.
Lee gave up 8 hits while striking out 5 as he came within one out of his 27th career complete game. He threw 106 pitches on the evening, 75 for strikes. Mike Adams struck out Ruben Tejada looking to end the contest.
Young went 3-for-4 finishing just a double short of the cycle after a single in the 2nd, the homer in the 3rd, and an RBI triple in the 4th.
Kyle Kendrick (0-1, 7.94) and Jeremy Hefner (0-1, 1.50) meet in the series and homestand finale Wednesday night at 7:05 (6:30 WDEL).
