Vice President Joe Biden participates in a Google Hangout discussion on gun control with mayors from American cities
Vice President Joe Biden took to the web Wednesday afternoon to discuss gun control, just hours before the failure of a Senate vote to expand background checks to more firearm buyers.

Biden participated in a Google Hangout with the mayors of Baltimore, Minneapolis, Gary, Ind. and Oak Creek, Wis. to discuss the topic of gun control measures. He says expanding background checks would make it more difficult for weapons bought legally to transferred to criminals.

"Straw purchasers provide the flow of these weapons into other people's...into these organized crime groups that then go out and sell it to gangbangers, sell it to people who should not have and cannot have a gun," Biden says.

He advocated for eliminating the "gun show loophole" that allows those purchasing firearms at such events to make a transaction without being subject to a background check.

"The NRA and the gun groups out there are saying 'this is a slippery slope, we're about to go out and force us to register our guns' or they call it registration. That couldn't be further from the truth," he says.

The vice president also noted that recidivism is an issue that often contributes to the frequency of violent crime in some American cities. He says those released from prison should have access to free drug counseling and that it's in the country's interest to make sure those reentering society have some access to housing.

"If you don't have a job, if you have no place to live, and you've been in jail, learning bad habits for the past eight years and there's no hope--guess what? You go back, you go back to crime," Biden says.

It was the second time Biden used a Google Hangout to discuss control, as the Vice President also hosted a similar meeting related to the same topic in January.
