Drug conviction for cartel member

A drug cartel member from San Diego is convicted in federal court in Wilmington.

38-year-old Miguel Lavenant was convicted of drug trafficking conspiracy and money laundering. Lavenant shipped over 50 kilograms of cocaine to the East Coast, and some of it was later distributed in Delaware.

He is a former enforcer and drug smuggler for a drug trafficking cartel based in Tijuana, Mexico, and he faces a minimum 10 years in prison with a maximum life sentence.

Lavenant's sentencing is set for August 16.
