Coons learned of the news while on WDEL's Afternoon News with Allan Loudell, and he praises those who voted for the bill.
"I think this passage of the marriage equality bill ushers in a new era of equality for our state. I'm very proud of the members of the state senate who stepped forward today and passed this vital marriage equality bill for Delaware," says Coons.
Coons adds that it's important that everyone has the right to get married no matter their sexual orientation.
"I think this is a historic day for our state. I think today's vote was about respecting basic human fairness for our neighbors. I think every Delawarean deserves the right to access all the responsibilities and the rights of marriage no matter what their orientation is," says Coons.
He also believes it's important that the law does not infringe on the religious liberties of any Delawarean.
