Hagley youth program teaches leadership and more

A program that teaches kids leadership and public service wins two awards.

The Hagley Museum and Library's Creek Kids Youth Leadership Program won the 2013 Jefferson Award for Public Service and the 2013 Governor's Youth Volunteer Service Award. Program coordinator Ruth Lonvick.

"How to be innovate and creative, and how to work with other people. And that's really what we're trying to do is to have our teens be really successful," she said.

Charter School of Wilmington rising senior Rebecca Malone has been a Creek Kid for 5 years.

"We work on planning and team-building and leadership skills, and then during the summer it's a little bit more involved because that's when we're actually running the programs," Rebecca said.

Akshata Yalvigi will be a senior at Avon Grove Charter School, and says planning events gave her real-world job experience.

"Make the event accessible for kids from 3 to 12, and then for teens, and then for adults, too, so figuring out how to make the same activity and the same information accessible to all ages through communication," Akshata said.

Dheeraj Jalluri is headed to Pitt this fall.

"Communication is something that's really important, especially in the field that I want to go into, because I hope to become a physician someday, and I'm pretty happy that I got to interact with a lot of different kinds of people," Dheeraj said.

Students work about 90 hours to implement six public programs that help tell the story of the very first product of the DuPont Company: black powder.
