A "topping out" ceremony at A. I. duPont Children's Hospital marks a milestone in the hospital's expansion.

The topping out ceremony ends the successful completion of the construction of the building's steel framework.

Members of the hospital's Youth Advisory Council offered a symbolic assist as a crane hoisted the final beam into place.

Executive vice-president Dr. Roy Proujansky says the expansion enhances Nemours mission of helping children and their families.

"Primarily we take care of children and their families, and we think that their experience, the environment in which they receive care, is absolutely critical to their health and healing," says Proujansky.

Proujanksy says children, families and caregivers provided important input during the design process.

"They nixed some ideas. They cast the deciding vote for some key decisions in the building because of what they thought would work best for them, and best met their needs should they be in the circumstance of having to spend some time in a children's hospital," Proujansky says.

Opening in late 2014, the expansion features all single-patient rooms, a five-story atrium with natural light and interactive play areas.

Hospital officials say the new wing incorporates many sustainable technologies that will keep operating costs low, and help protect the environment.

Topping out ceremonies date back to the Scandinavian tradition of placing an evergreen tree on top of a new building to symbolize growth and good luck.
