Five dogs from Faithful Friends animal shelter will provide comic relief, starring in the upcoming Delaware Shakespeare Festival in Rockwood Park.

The dogs will play Crab in Two Gentlemen of Verona.

"The character describes the role to be a little bit unpredictable so it was OK if the dog from the shelter wasn't extremely well-trained and didn't listen to everything its partner in the play did or asked of him," says Shannon O'Neil, Director of Development and Community Affairs for the no-kill animal shelter.

This is the first-time they've partnered with the festival.

"Our hope is that these particular dogs will get the exposure and they will actually get in front of new people that might never see them in the shelter and that eventually find a new home, a forever home for them, that's the ultimate goal," she says.

If Stella, Prince, Chili, Skylar or Bobbi get adopted halfway through the two-week festival, no worries, the show must go on!

"We also have some understudies if they're not available," she laughs.
