Sussex Co. woman dies in VA tubing accident
By Mark Fowser

A Sussex County woman drowns during an outing on the water in Virginia.

Authorities say 69-year-old Hope Stoeckel of Georgetown was part of a group tubing on the James River in Amherst County, when she slipped out of the tube and could not climb back in.

Relatives located her and got her to the bank of the river, where a worker with the James River Float Company performed CPR.

Ms. Stoeckel could not be revived.

Everyone involved was wearing the required flotation device.

The company had suspended tubing trips for several days until Sunday due to swift currents and high water.
