Blood Bank asking for summer blood donations

Christine Serio of the Blood Bank of Delmarva in Newark says blood inventories drop when the temperature goes up.

"Obviously they want to enjoy this weather, and so they don't always think about making their blood donation appointments," she said.

The American Red Cross says donations can drop as much as 10 percent in the summer, but accident victims and surgery patients still need blood. Serio says there's especially a need for the universal blood type O negative.

"Unfortunately, the need for blood doesn't take a vacation, and if they can come in, we'd love to have them come in," she said.
