County police say an Edgemoor woman has been arrested for abusing a five-year-old girl.

Police say officers responded to the home of Gloria Winchester in the Edgemoor Gardens community on Friday night for a complaint of child abuse originally made to the Division of Family Services.

Through an investigation, police say officers learned that Winchester allegedly slapped the girl while disciplining her for failing to get dressed. The child allegedly fell over a chair and struck her head, which caused scratch marks and bruising on her forehead.

The child was taken to A.I. DuPont Hospital for Children and later released.

Police say Winchester was arrested and has been charged with third-degree child abuse.

She was arraigned and released on $1,000 unsecured bail and was ordered to have no contact with the child.
