New Castle man arrested for discharging firearm

A New Castle man is arrested for discharging a firearm on Saturday morning in Newark.

Police say Xavier White was involved in a dispute in the area of 45 East Main Street. Police say he then got a handgun from his vehicle, fired two rounds that struck an unoccupied parked car in the Newark United Methodist Church parking lot. White then returned to his vehicle and took off.

A Unversity of Delaware police officer saw a vehicle matching the description of White's fail to stop at a red light on East Main Street. The officer tried to pull him over, but White took off.

The university officer was joined by an Newark police officer and
after a short distance, the vehicle stopped near Scholar Drive. Officers immediately placed White into custody. A semi-automatic handgun was located in the vehicle. The whole incident was caught on Newark city surveillance video.

No one was hurt.

White was charged and is now in Howard R. Young Correctional Institute in lieu of $44,500 secured bail.
