Fans of the new minor league basketball team in Delaware shouldn't expect a clone of the Sixers according to new Delaware Sevens GM Brandon Williams.
Williams, a Davidson grad who has spent the last eight years in the NBA's League office before joining the Sixers' front office last week, says the Sevens will be about attempting to innovate to help their parent club in all areas.
"We'll very much consider this a research and development lab. We're looking to develop coaches and see what talents they have, and skill coaches along with the players."
Williams can speak to minor league basketball players, he spent most of his career as a journeyman.
After graduating from Davidson he spent time in the Continental Basketball Association and overseas before landing with the Golden State Warriors in 1998. He claimed an NBA ring with the San Antonio Spurs the following year, and eventually landed in the D-League earning Honorable Mention honors with the Huntsville Flight in 2013.
"Along that journey there were lots of great highs and certainly some lows. The one thing I took away from my career is every day I was living the dream. I wanted to be a professional player. I think we all play for a mega-million guaranteed contract, but that won't happen for all players."
This is the first year the 76ers will own a team in the NBA Developmental League, after splitting rosters with up to five teams in the past. Williams says that will let the team easily rehab players and work out kinks in the team.
"If we want to work on our fast break defense, we can."
He also notes the location of the team, just 40 miles down I-95 from Philadelphia, can help shuttle players in and out a lot quicker than Sioux Falls or other outposts in the league.
The Sevens begin their inaugural season in the D-League November 23 at Canton (Oh.). The same teams will meet in Delaware's home opener on Sunday, December 8.
