WDEL's Jim Hilgen reports....
For centuries governments have named poets laureate to promote arts and literature.
Now Wilmington is adding its name to the list.
Councilman Nnamdi Chukwuocha says society as a whole benefits from the position.
"I believe that this position will be very prominent and will be very helpful to our city as we move forward to transform individuals in our community through the use of the arts," says Chukwuocha
City Council approved the action at its latest session.
Councilman Chukwuocha, himself a poet and writer says the arts can elevate the lives of city residents.
"Just as social workers and teachers and ministers play a role in the empowerment process of others, so do artists and poets," Chukwuocha says.
A search committee will identify candidates for the position.
That panel will include academics, citizens and appointees named by the mayor and City Council.
A poet laureate is expected to be named by spring of 2014.
