Authorities have identified human bones found in a southeastern Kentucky self-storage unit as those of a Newark woman who had been missing since 1997.

The remains found in Corbin last week were identified as those of Doris Wood, who disappeared from her Newark home 16 years ago.

Officials say her late husband, Robert Wood, rented the storage unit in 2002. He died earlier this year.

Investigators used the National Missing and Unidentified Persons System to match dental records and identify the remains.

According to the missing persons databases, Doris Wood was on her way to visit her sister in 1997 but never arrived. She was never seen again.

A man going through the contents of the storage unit he bought at an auction found the bones inside three grocery bags.
