The MERR Institute in Lewes says a high number of dead dolphins washed ashore following last weeks nor'easter

"As of Tuesday, we have had 20 dolphin strandings and five sea turtle strandings," says MERR Institute Executive Director Suzanne Thurman.

Thurman tells our sister station Delaware 105.9 that even though the storm is over, she expects more strandings in the coming weeks. But she cautions it's difficult to blame the strandings on any one thing.

"What we were seeing were animals that had been dead for awhile might not have ever been pushed ashore for us to document them, but because of the extra wave energy and storm surge, it did push them ashore. So what we were seeing were really decomposed, degraded animals that we couldn't get viable samples from. We only had a couple that were slightly fresher," says Thurman.
