First it looked like a stunning Delaware comeback as the Blue Hens marched 72 yards in 11 plays, scoring on an 11 yard touchdown run by Andrew Pierce with 45 seconds left to take their first lead of the game 43-39, over Richmond.

But Richmond's quarterback Michael Strauss had other ideas. Strauss coolly marched the Spiders 75 yards in 7 plays, in 41 seconds, ending with a 3 yard TD pass to Reggie Diggs, to give the Spiders an even more improbable 46-43 win and put a damper on Delaware's playoff hopes.

Richmond's offense ran roughshod over Delaware all afternoon, rolling up 680 total yards, led by Strauss, who completed 35 of 46 passes for a Richmond record 543 yards, 5 touchdowns and an interception. Three of his receivers passed 100 yards...Rashad Ponder with 9 catches for 175 yards, Stephen Barnette, who caught 8 passes for 127 yards and a touchdown and Brian Brown, who grabbed 3 passes for 109 yards and a score.

Richmond led 29-17 at the half and led 39-31 in the 4th quarter before quarterback Trent Hurley went to work, leading the Blue Hens to a pair of 4th quarter scores that would eventually put them up, 43-39 with 45 seconds left.

Hurley would finish 18 for 35 for 286 yards and 4 touchdowns of his own. He also carried the ball 14 times for 47 yards, as Delaware rolled up 411 yards of total offense. Michael Johnson caught 4 passes for 132 yards and a score. Pierce had two touchdowns, one rushing and one receiving.

But it would be the inability of the Blue Hens defense to get a stop on the final drive that led to their 4th defeat of the season and 3rd in the CAA.

Delaware drops to 7-4 overall and 4-3 in the league, Richmond goes to 5-6 and 3-4 in the conference.

Now, Delaware faces an absolute must-win situation in their season finale next Saturday against Villanova at PPL Park...and if they should get in to the FCS playoffs, likely would not get a home game.
