Newark Police have arrested a woman for DUI after she hits an officer directing traffic with her car.

Police say 29-year-old Melinda Dunlap, of Dover, was driving eastbound on East Delaware Avenue around 2:30 Friday afternoon when she approached a pedestrian crosswalk at University of Delaware campus.

Reports say the university police officer was standing in the crosswalk, signaling Dunlap to stop, but she just continued driving.

The officer was able to move out of the way, but was struck in the arm by Dunlap's car.

Police say Dunlap's car then ran into the back of another vehicle near the rear entrance of the Galleria.

Investigators say Dunlap was found to have alcohol in her system. This makes her third Driving Under the Influence charge.

Dunlap was arraigned and committed to the Baylor Women's Correctional Institution in lieu of $43,206 cash bail.

The UD officer was treated at the scene for a minor injury to his elbow.

Neither Dunlap nor the driver of the car she hit were injured.
