Polytech's coach John Pierce said that his boys basketball team has struggled with being consistent all season so when the Panthers traveled up north on Tuesday to face a Hodgson team that entered the contest with as many losses as Polytech had wins on the season, Pierce was ready for the challenge.
Polytech trailed after the first quarter, but big men Devaughn Mallory and Juwan Gray led the Panthers to a 54-49 victory.
In the opening quarter, Hodgson went on a 8-2 run with the help of senior Matthew Peel. Polytech closed in on the Silver Eagles' lead, but Derek Lambert recovered a turnover in the final seconds, drove to the hoop and gave Hodgson a 12-9 edge after one quarter of play.
To open the second, Polytech's Trent Watson gave his team its first lead with 6:11 left to play in the half. Gray drained two 3-pointers to help extend the Polytech lead 27-23 at the break. Gray had 14 points at halftime.
In the third, Hodgson tied the game twice, including a buzzer-beating shot from Peel. Going into the final quarter, both teams tallied 38 points a piece.
Peel gave Hodgson a one point edge in the fourth, when he hit a foul-line jumper. But Mallory and Gray kept the Silver Eagles out of reach to secure its fourth victory of the season.
Gray finished with 20 points, while Mallory finished with 16 points. Watson chipped in 13 points.
Hodgson's Peel led all scorers with 24 points.
The Silver Eagles fell to 10-4 and travel to Wilmington Friends on Thursday for a non-conference game, while Polytech hopes to keep the momentum rolling as they host a 6-9 Smyrna team.
