An 18-year-old student at Newark High School was arrested and charged after a stolen firearm and marijuana were found inside his backpack on Tuesday, city police said.

A staff member told members of the school's administration about 12:15 p.m. that Zakeer Washington of Wilmington may have been in possession of marijuana, police said.

An administrator then contacted Washington and police said a large amount of marijuana was found inside his backpack.

The school's resource officer was then notified and police said he conducted a search of Washington and his backpack.

A loaded .45 handgun and 46 grams of marijuana packaged in 45 small plastic vials and seven small bags were discovered inside the bag along with a large quantity of cash, police said.

The firearm was reported stolen in Somerset County, Pa. in August 2013.

Washington was arraigned on firearm and drug charges. He's been committed to Howard R. Young Correctional Institution in lieu of $39,200 cash bail.
