"It's a definite big step for a 14-year-old girl. A huge step," says Bria Evans.

Evans, who is an honor roll student at Gunning Bedford Middle School, is playing the role of 'Mekhai' in the play 'Mrs. Independent' at the Merriam Theater. Priest Tyaire plays her dad, and her stepmother is played by Robin Givens.

"She's very lovely. I love her. She's a nice person to work with," she said.

This role is a lucky break for Bria - she performed in just one play in middle school and was bumped up to the role of Mekhai after being cast as an understudy. And the stage is getting bigger - the show is going on tour to seven cities.
