VIDEO: Highlights and reaction to Delaware's winKelsey Buchanan scored a career-high 33 points to go with 12 rebounds on an 85-71 Valentine's Day matinee win over Charleston.
Delaware's chance to avenge last month's last-second loss to the Cougars had to wait 20 hours due to Thursday's snowstorm postponing the game to Friday, but the Blue Hens came out ready to play by scoring the game's first six points and sending 6-foot-5 center Mikaela Hopkins to the bench with two early fouls.
Buchanan scored 15 points in the first half as Delaware eventually went up by 13 and led 40-31 at the break.
Charleston, who led by as many as 23 in the first meeting before needing a buzzer-beater to win the first time, rallied back with a 14-2 half-opening run to jump ahead 45-42 on a three-pointer by Alyssa Frye.
Delaware hasn't always responded well to adversity this season, but they aced the Cougars' exam by counterpunching with a 20-6 run to reestablish a 65-53 lead, and Charleston got no closer than eight in the final 9 minutes of the game.
Buchanan's 33 tops her previous career high of 27 she set twice, including the first meeting with Charleston. She was 10-for-24 from the floor and hit 13-of-17 at the charity stripe.
Hannah Jardine narrowly missed her first career double-double by scoring 8 points and getting a career-high 12 rebounds.
Joy Caracciolo scored 14 points while Courtni Green added 13.
Alyssa Frye scored 23 points, including 15 in the second half, to lead Charleston (12-12, 5-6 CAA), while Breanna Bolden picked up 11 points and 10 rebounds.
Delaware (15-6, 7-3 CAA) returns to the floor of the Bob Carpenter Center Sunday afternoon at 2pm when they host Towson. Friday began a stretch where they will play every-other-day for a 4-game stretch. They are at Drexel Tuesday and back home next Thursday against James Madison.
