You can protect your identity and do a little spring cleaning at the same time Saturday.

A free shredding event, sponsored by the attorney general’s office, will take place between 9:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m., in the parking lot of William Penn High School in New Castle.

According to the A.G.'s Consumer Protection Unit, shredding bank statements, bills, and other documents that contain consumers' information is one of the easiest steps you can take to help prevent ID theft.

You can take up to three file-sized boxes of documents to get shredded.

According to the federal government, financial loss from identity theft reached nearly $25 billion in 2012.
