EdWatch: Congressional Art Award winner hails from Cab Calloway

A Cab Calloway student's work of art will hang in the halls of Congress.

Nikita Doskochynskyy's hand moves in a quick, sweeping motion as he draws the intimate features of your face.

It all began by drawing simple stick figures.

"I actually used to say, 'I hate drawing portraits' because I'm so bad at it, I don't understand how to do all the facial features, but now it's actually what I have built a career on," said Doskochynskyy.

The Cab Calloway sophomore is a master with pencil and pen. "Misery" a charcoal portrait of himself after a breakup, shows the wrinkles on his forehead, the kind you'd ordinarily see on an old man.

"I just wanted to distract myself; I just wanted to keep working so I didn't have bad feelings or like start missing her. I worked so hard, I didn't even value sleep," he said.

The piece won the state's 2014 Congressional Art Award and will hang in the Capitol.

"It feels pretty good because I'm just imagining it, my face is with the presidents of the United States," he said.

His portraits of famous people like Johnny Depp and Kendrick Lamar are all over the East coast.

"It's an amazing feeling. It feels like you're appreciated for something. You know, it's kind of like being famous, but it's not really being famous. It's your work that matters the most," Doskochynskyy said.
