DelDOT Project Engineer Jenna Frye talks about the project.DelDOT is proposing a project that would widen Route 1 from the I-95 interchange to the Roth Bridge.
WDEL's Joe Irizarry reports.
The $185 million project would add travel lanes in each direction, widen existing bridges and reconfigure the interchanges at Routes 273, 40 and 72.
DelDOT Project Engineer Jenna Frye says there are multiple reasons for this project.
"Not only do we need to increase the capacity on Route 1 because of the congestion in the area and our future projections of traffic in the area. We also have a huge safety concern in some of our interchanges along the corridor," says Frye.
Frye adds if the project moves forward the first bit of construction funding is in fiscal year 2016, and 80 percent of the whole project will be funded federally.
