Blue Rocks just miss a shutout in road win

The Blue Rocks fell one out short of a shutout, but defeated Carolina 5-1 for their 3rd straight victory Tuesday night.

Starting left-hander Sam Selmon pitched five innings of one-hit baseball to earn the win, with fellow southpaw Antonio Cruz keeping the Mudcats at bay for 2 1/3 innings. Robinson Yambati attempted to complete the shutout, but Jordan Smith's 2-out RBI single broke up the hopes for the first shutout of the season. The Mudcats only had 1 hit through the first eight innings.

Tim Ferguson paced the offense with a 2-for-3 night where he reached base all four times including a solo home run in the second inning. His out was recorded on a strikeout, but still made first base thanks to a wild pitch on strike three.

Cheslor Cuthburt and Jorge Bonifacio each drove in two runs for Wilmington, who wrap up their season-opening road trip with an 11am game Wednesday. The Blue Rocks' home opener with Frederick is Friday night at 7:05.
