St. Mark's cruised to an early 5-0 lead in the first quarter, but Spartans' coach Mark Reynolds gave credit to his team's patience as they beat Appoquinimink 15-5 in the first round.

Both teams entered Tuesday's DIAA state tournament game with matching 12-3 records, but fifth-seeded St. Mark's offense proved to be too much for the Jaguars.

In the opening quarter, Spartans' James Magnani scored first and four different teammates followed scoring in a four minute span to gain the early edge. Magnani led all scorers with five goals.

12-seeded Appo didn't score their first goal until junior Eric Mack scored one of his two goals with 9:32 left in the half.

St. Mark's answered right back, when Michael Walsh came right out of a Spartans time out firing to give his team the 7-1 advantage. Walsh finished with four goals and two assists.

The Spartans extended the lead 9-2 going into the half, when Joseph Giannaras scored a goal of his own.

After a slow third quarter, St. Mark's continued to shoot and score with five more goals from Morgan Madonna, Magnani, and Walsh to secure the victory.

St. Mark's out shot Appo 41-18.

When Appo (12-4) and St. Mark's faced off earlier this season, the Spartans shutdown the Jaguars in the first half and went on to win 16-3.

St. Mark's (13-3) advances to play No. 4 seed Tower Hill. In the regular season, the Spartans dropped to the Hillers 16-11.
