Senator Bobby Marshall is calling for a 10-cent hike in the gas tax, and Governor Markell is reportedly exploring raising the fuel tax 5-cents per gallon.
House Minority Leader Danny Short, a Republican from Seaford, says this is not the right time to consider a hike.
He says residents and small businesses are still trying to recover from the recession, and many are making less money now, while some are still looking for jobs.
House Minority Whip, Deborah Hudson says, "There is no way we would consider it."
They both say any need to shore up the Transportation Trust Fund should wait unit the next year, so budget writers can fit it into the budget at the beginning of the process, not at the end.
