Biden was scheduled to headline a fundraiser for the Democratic National Committee at the home of Alison and Bill Vareika. Alison Vareika says the event has been called off.
Biden's son, Attorney General Beau Biden, felt weak and disoriented last week and was admitted to a Chicago-area hospital. He returned home but traveled a few days later to Houston for testing at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center.
CBS News Chief White House Correspondent Major Garrett says Beau Biden underwent testing on Monday and was admitted as a patient on Tuesday.
The vice president accompanied his son to Houston on Monday and has remained with him in Texas.
Biden became Attorney General in 2007. He suffered a mild stroke in 2010.
The White House hasn't said whether Biden's other appearances Thursday have also been canceled.
On Thursday, Biden was to attend an event at Salve Regina University in Rhode Island and a fundraiser in Maine for New Hampshire Gov. Maggie Hassan.
Salve Regina University says Biden may not attend but the event will occur in his absence.
White House spokesman Josh Earnest says Biden is still scheduled to join President Barack Obama in Pennsylvania at a Friday event.
Jason Miller, a spokesman for the state Justice Department, said Monday night that Beau Biden was hospitalized after he became weak and disoriented following a drive for a family vacation.
Miller could not be reached by phone Tuesday night to confirm whether Biden is being treated at the Houston cancer center.
Biden checked in to Northwestern University Hospital last Wednesday after a long drive to Indiana.
After feeling better, he traveled to Jefferson University Hospital in Philadelphia to consult with his doctor about feeling of disorientation and weakness. He then spent the weekend at home in Wilmington.
Miller said Beau Biden spoke with Chief Deputy Attorney General Ian McConnel over the weekend, and was in touch with his office Monday night.
