By Michelle Provencher 10:25pm, October 8, 2013Financial support for survivors of recently deceased military personnel is in jeopardy due to the government shutdown.
Senators Tom Carper and Chris Coons are asking Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel to immediately make payments to the families of Armed Forces casualties.
Along with five of their colleagues, Coons and Carper sent the letter to Hagel Tuesday.
Specifically, the letter asks for immediate cash assistance for families of five service members killed in Afghanistan last weekend.
The death gratuity program typically offers $100,000 tax-free to survivors of the Armed Forces who died in combat.
