State Treasurer Chip Flowers says reports insinuating he was romantically involved with his former Deputy are an attempt to damage his political career.

"There was nothing inappropriate going on between myself and Ms. Benner."

Speaking on WDEL's Al Mascitti Show, Flowers says early-morning room service charges he rang up while at a conference in Alaska last year came about from a breakfast meeting in his suite and Erika Benner was not in the room at the time.

"Ms. Benner and I were friends, are friends. She's in recovery for her situation and I wish her the best, and I'm not going to sit here and lie because I'm not ashamed of being her friend, I don't care what the paper....the paper can put any implication they want."

Flowers says he and Benner did sight-see in Alaska together on "one or two occasions."

In August, Benner resigned from her post amid allegations of misusing her state-issued credit card for personal expenses.

Flowers says state code prohibits him from disclosing publicly who he meets with since it could compromise information about treasury investments on behalf of the state pension fund.

State GOP wants probe of DE Treasurer's office

The Chairman of the Delaware Republican Party is calling for a full investigation into the Delaware Treasurer's office.
A written statement says recent published reports regarding illegal campaign contributions accepted by a number of statewide officials followed by accusations that Treasurer Chip Flowers and his staff may be using taxpayer funds for personal trips destroy voters' confidence and leave them questioning the integrity of their elected officials.
The state GOP claims Governor Markell and Democrats in the Legislature have remained silent on Flowers' actions.
The party is calling for an appropriate state authority to look deeper into the issues.
