No. 4 Caesar Rodney raced out to a big lead, but had to withstand a 316-yard effort by William Penn's Reggie Carroll in a 49-33 victory in the DIAA Football Tournament 1st Round.

The hosts struggled on their opening drive, but that was about all that stopped them in the opening 24 minutes as they raced out to a 35-7 advantage.

Dominique Dorsey scored on a pair of 1-yard runs, Alex Kemp threw touchdown passes to Kendall Wicks and Seth Brosius and had a one-yard plunge himself, and Arthur Miles had two interceptions in the 1st half.

William Penn turned the momentum with 2:47 left before the break when Daniel Johnson found Deshawn Smith for a 15-yard score to make it 35-13 after a blocked extra point.

Carroll then took that momentum, and run it into the heart of the Riders' defense. After scoring on a 72-yard sprint on the final play of the opening quarter, he found major running lanes again on the first two possessions of the 2nd half, scoring from 35 and 75 yards away, suddenly making it a 35-27 contest with 6:27 to go in the 3rd quarter.

Dean Johnson upped the lead back to 15 for CR with a 1-yard run with 2:10 to go in the 3rd quarter, only to have Carroll score his 4th touchdown of the night, this time from a yard away to make it 42-33 after another blocked extra point.

CR then needed just over two minutes to salt the game away when an option pitch to Cody Connell led to a 14-yard touchdown, and the 49-33 final score.

Caesar Rodney advances to face No. 1 Middletown Friday night at 7:30pm at Cavaliers Stadium.
