VIDEO: An interview with Newark mayoral candidate Rebecca Powers.Rebecca Powers says she'll try to make sure Main Street and Newark's Downtown area continue to be successful if she's elected mayor in next week's special election.
WDEL's Tom Lehman has more...
"It's a great place to gather, and shop, and dine and celebrate, and I think that we need to make sure that keeps going," Powers says. "I'd like to see downtown events continue to thrive, we might need a refresher on some of them."
Powers, a 28-year-old landscape designer who lives on Lehigh Road, also served on the Downtown Newark Partnership's Design Committee.
If elected mayor, she says improving communication between the city and the University of Delaware will be among her goals.
Achieving that, she says, might require bringing back some version of the city's defunct Town and Gown committee.
"The restoration of a formal committee isn't enough. We need to make sure that the right people are on that committee," she says. "We need to make sure that intelligent, articulate and hard-working people are representing our city's best interests."
Powers also thinks city residents should have been better notified about the proposed data center and power generating facility at UD's Science, Technology and Advanced Research campus.
"I don't think that the data center with the accompanying 248-megawatt power plant is appropriate for a residential community," she says.
Powers also wants to see better promotion of the city's Unibus system, which she thinks could help alleviate traffic. She also supports the construction of a parking garage behind the Main Street Galleria.
